Why shouldn’t they help themselves, after the way they’d been treated? Alex didn’t think it was a good idea for Cathy and him to take what they wanted, just because it was handy, and it seemed no one was around to stop them. It wouldn’t be helpful in maintaining some semblance of a relationship with the woman, Joan, who owned the store on the corner.
Joan could be unkind to her customers, but she always kept her store doors locked. She had suffered a substantial loss once because she had forgotten to turn the lock on the door properly. So, something had to be wrong if they could just walk in.
He walked toward the door to her living quarters and called out, “Hello, Joan? Are you okay?” When there was no answer, Alex stepped through the door, concerned that something had happened to the woman. He crept up the stairs, even though he was terrified of what Joan might have done if she caught him in her home.
When he reached Joan’s living room, he was surprised to see her sitting at a table in front of a round, iridescent ball that spewed beautiful colors, as if it were a prism. Joan was mouthing words with her eyes closed. When she turned and looked at him strangely, he turned and ran down the stairs, not waiting to understand what was happening. He didn’t want to know!
He grabbed Cathy’s hand, and they hightailed it out of there, not interested anymore in buying anything. They never went back to the corner store!
