Joining Jesus at the Well: Sunday Devotion

John 4:4-8 He had to go through Samaria on the way. Eventually, he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.

To know that Jesus experienced tiredness and weariness comforts me. It would be fantastic to speak openly and freely with Him, particularly in these times of divisiveness and misinformation. To be alone with Him and to learn from Him where and how to worship God and to have Him give us the living water that bubbles up into eternal life would be immeasurable blessings.

The Samaritan woman did not have to tell him of her hurts, wounds, and sorrows, for He already knew of them, which is why He “had” to go through Samaria for this divine encounter by Jacob’s well. Whatever we may be experiencing today, the old-time hymn reminds us to “have a little talk with Jesus.” He will meet us where we are, whether in our homes, on our jobs, or by the river on vacation.

The offer of the living water of the Holy Spirit to overflowing is a marvelous motivation to join Him at the well today and to really listen to what He says to us through the Word of God, for eternal life is the prize we seek, forever in the presence of God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Come to the well today, my sisters and brothers, and be renewed by the wisdom, compassion, and amazing love of the KIng of kings.

Amen.
