The Quietness of Rural Living Soothes the Soul

Daily writing prompt
What do you love about where you live?

We live in a rural area, and it takes us nearly 30 minutes to get to the nearest interstate. At first, my husband and I thought we had made a mistake because it took so long to go anywhere. Also, our children hesitate to drive more than an hour from their homes to visit. They say that there is nothing out here to do. So we considered moving again closer to the city with all its cultural venues that we love and to motivate coming to Grandma’s house.

But we are in our seventies, and the quietness of our surroundings means sweet rest and a sense of safety that matters at our ages. The absence of sirens and constant noise soothes our souls and brings us peace of mind. We once went on a weekend jaunt and left the garage door open with the back door unlocked. When we returned, all was well. Our neighbors had watched over our home.

We live on a cul-de-sac with only a forest of trees behind us, so we don’t need to cut grass, which is done in the front and side yards by the HOA. In the summer, the greenery around us draws us to the deck for reading and reflection. It is like living in the middle of the woods, with the birdsong so sweet each morning. In the winter, the stark beauty of leafless trees is so calming. In the changing of the trees, I am reminded that our bodies need rest and to rejuvenate for the next seasons of our lives. We still marvel at our good fortune.

We feel safe in the quietness. I will admit that as a city girl, the quiet disturbed me at first. I told my husband I needed to hear the cars, trucks, and sirens to know I was still alive. But after a short while, I realized that quietness meets a life-affirming need to know when the day ends, and we can be at rest.

Yes, sometimes I don’t like traveling so far to go downtown for museums and the symphony or plays. I sometimes miss having great restaurants within a ten-minute drive. I wish my children didn’t think we live too far out to bring the grandchildren and great-grandchildren to visit.

But, we go to them when we need to see everyone, often meeting a child halfway for dinner or to take in an outing. I wouldn’t trade the solitude of our home for anything. I like that after 10:00, the sidewalks seem rolled up, and peace and quiet prevail.

  1. There is much to be said for living closer to nature. Where I live, there is nature all around me. The forest surrounds, many birds including hawks, owls, robins, grouse, moose, fox, and more abound. The quiet of nature, makes a huge difference in the tranquility of life. There are cultural events available but there is nothing like a walk along the river, time at the lake, or a beautiful walk.

Regina, blessings to you and yours as you meet midway to visit!
