Walking is My Gift to My Heart and Mind

Daily writing prompt
How often do you walk or run?

My husband and I walk five days a week between using the treadmill at home or at the gym and walking outside on the Silver Comet Trail. For me, walking is how to remain healthy in my 70s. I would much rather walk in nature, but sometimes it isn’t possible. I don’t attempt to run. I know my limits.

Walking outdoors, I talk to God or allow the beauty around me to speak to my soul and bring me such peace. On the Treadmill, I usually watch a couple of murder mysteries on Acorn or PBS, and when the culprit is identified, I have met my 7000 steps goal. Walking is one of the few exercises that I can do. I have had three back surgeries, last August’s latest, including two fusions. Even so, my back is sensitive, so I walking is the most rational exercise I undertake. I do go to the gym two or three times a week and work my legs, as my left leg is still numb at the knee from the last back surgery.

I walk for my heart, as I have a defibrillator. I say to my heart, “This is so you, sweetheart!” I also walk and go to the gym to keep my mind healthy. Walking is wonderful. It is a time of reflection and meditation. Walking also reminds me that when I experience difficult times, I just need to keep putting one foot in front of the other until I reach my destination. And for someone who loves to travel, walking keeps me in shape for hikes and long walks, such as in the streets of Paris this summer.

Walking keeps me healthy and wise. It’s my gift to my body and mind.
