Psalm 19:1-4 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day, they pour forth speech; night after night, they reveal knowledge. They have no speech; they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens, God has pitched a tent for the sun.
We were in a rural area far from a large urban city. There were no lights, and we went there for an astronomy lesson on the constellations. Being a city girl, I was accustomed to seeing only a few stars on some nights. But out in the country, I believe most of us gasped at the sheer number of stars when we looked up to the sky in the darkness.
It was like someone had scattered every diamond in the world on a black velvet sky. I couldn’t fathom that there were so many stars in the sky. And I remembered that Psalm 147:4 states that God counts the stars and knows them all by name! I was impressed that the Creator could remember so many stars, but our psalm today reminds us that the heavens declare the glory of God and proclaim the work of His hands in their amazing beauty and awesomeness.
Without speaking, just by being there constantly night after night and century after century, the skies demonstrate the knowledge that helps travelers find their way. God speaks to us through the stars and heavens above and reminds us that He knows us each by name, just as he does the stars and galaxies in the heavens, and His ways are the best.
Look up tonight, whether in a large urban city or in the country’s rural areas and praise the Lord for the majesty of His handiwork, which can be witnessed by the skies and the stars. With your voice, give God the praise He is due, for we, too, are His masterpieces, and through us, if we love with His faithful love, people will see His goodness and call on His name.
Praise the Lord today, no matter what may be wrong in your life. Look up into the night sky and remember the One who put the sun and the moon in the heavens and separated day from night in His wisdom. Then, realize that He can still do the impossible and that His love for you never wavers. Praise the Lord, knowing that God will get the glory from your steadfastness amid trials.
Amen.
