We went to Alicante, Spain, in 2018. One of the places to explore nearby was the Valor Chocolate Museum and Factory in Villajoyosa, Spain. We knew we were in the right place because you could smell chocolate all over the city. As a chocolate lover, it was like being on a chocolate planet. We had bought our tickets online and didn’t know what we would experience. The visit was one of the highlights of the trip.
We learned the making of chocolate from beginning to end, and I was enthralled by watching the processes by which they turn seeds from cacao tree pods into chocolate bars and cocoa for drinking. In the museum, we saw instruments used through the centuries in the processes and were simply amazed at the knowledge of our guide.
But the best part was at the end of the tour, where we could drink as much hot cocoa as we wanted and were given chocolate bars. It was when I learned that I did not like dark chocolate. My husband loves it, but I was accustomed to milk chocolate, and even as a diabetic, I still prefer it. Dark chocolate leaves a bitter aftertaste in my mouth. The combination of chocolate drinks and bars made my mouth happy and delighted my soul. We took a lot of chocolate back to our rental and then home (see some above). As black female, I also liked that the representative of the chocolate was a black female (see below).
What a day that was! I loved the city, which was all about the chocolate. I thought how great it would be to smell chocolate every day, and you could go to the factory at least once a week and indulge your senses and soul. There was a little city near there that I still hope to return to, called Elche. Living in Elche and visiting Villajoyosa would be my ultimate living experience. I keep asking Douglas, but he isn’t as taken with Spain as I was.
