Is There Anyone Still Breathing in the Villages of England?

Daily writing prompt
What movies or TV series have you watched more than 5 times?

I have streaming services from the United Kingdom, such as Acorn and Britbox. I have watched so many murders over the four years of watching both that I am nearly afraid to visit a village in England. I love Vera, A Touch of Frost, Father Brown and Sister Boniface, Agatha Christie, Hamish Macbeth, Midsomer Murders, Lewis, Morse, and London Kills. I also love Brokenwood, Candace Renoir, Wallander, and other shows in Europe.

I travel precariously through all of the shows that specialize in murder, enjoying the beautiful villages and green open spaces just right for long walks. I feel as though I step across the Atlantic Ocean each night. Some shows are too dark for me, but I watched the newest Agatha Christie this weekend, Murder is Easy, and I loved the young African male who was like a detective. His clothes were sharp, and I felt proud that he was young, gifted, and black. Take a step back, Poirot!

There is so much to stream now that it can feel overwhelming. I remember when you knew the day of the week by the shows you watched, back when there were just three channels to watch. But I also like to watch shows by great writers like Ann Cleeves, so I don’t need to read the books. I sometimes say, “Might I have a word?” or “Jolly Good, old chap!” I am becoming quite English, but I will admit that the thought of visiting a small village in England leaves me ambivalent as to whether I would survive or, even better if I would be the one to find the culprit and get on their bad side.

Yes, I check to see if another season is coming of all of my shows, and I hate it when I run out of seasons and come to the last show, as in George Gently, But now that Vera and Death in Paradise are back, I am a very happy woman. Let the cozy mysteries continue!

  1. My husband laughs when I talk sometimes because my speech has become so British! I love many of these same shows. Others I’ll make sure to watch. While there are no crimes, All Creatures Great and Small gives me the same beautiful villages and green open spaces.
