Psalm 119:73-76 You made me; you created me. Now give me the sense to follow your commands. May all who fear you find in me a cause for joy, for I have put my hope in your word. I know, O Lord, that your regulations are fair; you disciplined me because I needed it. Now let your unfailing love comfort me, just as you promised me, your servant.
When I think of someone from the Bible with a servant’s heart, I think of Mary Magdalene and the women who came early in the morning, at dawn, to complete preparing Jesus’s body. Those women wanted to ensure everything was done correctly, decently, and in order. They walked through the streets in the early morning hours, a dangerous activity for women, and especially for women followers of Jesus who had been crucified. Indeed, the male disciples were locked in an upper room, afraid of what might happen to them as His followers.
Mary Magdalene had been healed by Jesus and had, in gratitude and love, supported Him and the disciples from her own resources. Later, on Resurrection Day, she met Jesus in a garden, and when He called her name, she knew His voice. That is the kind of servant’s heart I seek, one that knows the voice of my Savior when He calls me to do the work of the Father. He is the source of my hope and strength, and with unfailing love, He comforts me in times of trials. So, like the psalmist, I want to be a servant that He can depend on, similar to my being able to trust in His promises that have never failed me.
May I bring joy and comfort to everyone He sends me to, and may the way I treat people result in their seeing Jesus in me. Like Mary Magdalene, may I always be ready to act in ways that allow people to know that I love Jesus and want to serve Him and His people.
Amen.
