John 6: 24-27 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they also got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus. And when they found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, “Rabbi, when did You come here?”Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
The day before, Jesus had fed over five thousand with five barley loaves and two fishes, with twelve baskets of leftovers. This feat impressed the crowds who came to hear to see him. They also saw his miracles on the sick and followed him and his disciples. When the people saw that Jesus and the disciples had left the area, they found ships to take them across the sea to Capernaum to seek Jesus.
When they found him, they wanted to know how he came across the sea because they saw his disciples leave without him, and there were no other boats he could have taken. Jesus knew they were seeking him because they had eaten of the loaves and were filled, not because they had seen signs pointing to Jesus as the Messiah. He reminded them that the food that leads to eternal life, meaning the lessons that Jesus taught regarding how to treat people and live lives acceptable to God, was more important than food for the physical body. Jesus wanted them to comprehend that food that nourishes the spirit and the soul is more valuable and worthy of seeking than food that perishes.
They came seeking him for the wrong reasons. They sought him for what they could receive from him rather than how the “bread” he offered would improve their lives. He was offering them eternal life through faith in him; they only saw the miracle of the loaves and fishes. In John 6: 36, Jesus says that even though they saw him, they still did not believe that he was the Son of God sent to save them from their sins.
Today, let us be sure that we are not seeking Jesus because of the blessings he has bestowed in our lives while neglecting to study and learn the words of God that Jesus, the bread of life, offers us. Seek Jesus while he may be found, but understand why you seek him. Seek him to learn the salvation plans of God and the way and truth to have eternal life in our heavenly abode.
Amen.
