You Can’t Go Wrong with Sugar!

Daily writing prompt
What’s the most delicious thing you’ve ever eaten?

I love sugar! I think it is a gift from God! I like it in pies, cakes, candy, cookies, jelly, jams, and even coleslaw. It is the most delicious of all spices, and anything with lots of sugar is delicious. As a poor child, we didn’t have desserts. We only got Christmas candy, and I remember sweet potato pie for Thanksgiving. I never had a birthday party, so cake was not something we had even once a year.

I didn’t know that people generally had dessert after Sunday meals until I was invited by a school friend to her home for dinner. I loved eating something sweet after having meat and potatoes. The taste of sweetness on my lips was heavenly.

I must have promised myself that I would always have something sweet in my house as an adult. I made sure there were desserts on Sundays and kept cookies, albeit from a bag, for my children. When I eat out, I want pie or cake afterward. It doesn’t seem like a full meal until dessert is served.

The most delicious dessert I ever ate was German Chocolate Cake, with that wonderful frosting filled with nuts. It was so sweet that I thought I could have it daily and be very happy. A close second would be Banana Pudding or Coconut pie. There are only two pies I don’t like, Key Lime pie and Cherry Pie, because they are tart and sweet, and the tartness spoils it for me.

Today, I can’t eat anything sweet except Graham crackers, but only two squares. Anything with high fructose sugar, including fruits, bothers me badly. I have had three or four small bowel obstructions. After many tests, I discovered that I just can’t digest a lot of sugar, not even artificial sweeteners, after colon cancer surgery. But as a diabetic who controls my disease with diet and exercise, I don’t need the sugar. Oh, how I miss it! Goodbye, sweet pies and cakes. It was good while it lasted!

  1. Sugar bothers me as well, but there is something I’ve discovered in the process of dealing with that. First, we Americans eat too much sugar. There is sugar in everything – condiments, salad dressings, stir fry, so many things. However, sugar only has the flavor of sugar. It overpowers any other flavor. When you stop eating sugar, other flavors pop out. Sugar dulls our taste buds. Nowadays, sugar just tastes boring to me. Flavors are amazing. If I eat something sweet on occasion, it has to have flavor, not just the taste of sugar. It’s a little like God’s Word. People can sweeten it with all kinds of sugary ideas, but the true Word of God has beautiful flavor taken straight up!

  2. I am a fellow sugar abuser! I didn’t realize all the downsides of sugar until I went on the Keto diet. It made me realize enough that I curbed it from my diet even after Keto. Nice article and comforting to know there are others out there. I’m not saying I don’t miss it because I CRAVE it constantly it seems.
