Lately, as I am completing the last papers of my Master’s degree in Religious Studies, I have needed comfort food many times. I think the employees at the local Chic-Fil-A know my husband and me almost as family. I promise myself that I will only have the Grilled Chicken Club and not include the waffle fries. Instead, I find myself ordering the large waffle fries because I need a lot of comfort.
There is something almost ambrosial about those fries, with all the holes in them. They are always seasoned just right. I must eat them two or more times a week. I dip them in the Ranch sauce, and oh boy, I find peace for my weary soul. On Sundays, as we pass the Chic-Fil-A on our way home from church, I almost cry, but I respect their religious beliefs, which are more important than my need to indulge in salty pleasure.
I think that waffle fries are one of the great culinary inventions of our time, and I am thankful that the one near me has moved into a bigger space so I can obtain my guilty pleasures without waiting in a long queue. Although, admittedly, a long line of cars does not deter me when I need the comfort of those golden beauties.
So, here’s to comfort foods that make us feel better and restore the universe’s balance when we feel off-kilter. May you always be there to bring us immeasurable joy! Back to the papers!

Yes, those waffle fries are so good. I get the regular sandwich though, but must have the fries!
And, good luck with your studies! 🙂
