Mark 8:30-34 Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?”His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’”n But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.”
When I think of the woman healed from hemorrhaging for twelve long years, I reflect on all that she had lost as she endured being viewed as unclean. Her family could not enjoy her company. She could not attend the synagogue and hear the sermons that would give her strength and feed her soul to help in those difficult times. She had no friends willing to be near her, too afraid of being stained by her presence.
It had to have been so awful on many levels, physically, mentally, socially, spiritually, and financially, when you consider that she spent all of her money trying to get well. When sickness comes, we do all we can to return to everyday routines and leave the trials of illness behind us, so I can’t blame her for her persistence.
But her courage thrills me and gives us a glimpse of human perseverance and fortitude. She heard that Jesus was nearby, and knowing that being in a crowd without crying out “unclean” could possibly get her killed, she sought her healing at the only Source of hope left to her. She boldly reached through the others surrounding Jesus, not allowing her fears to deter her, and touched his garment. Healing power emanated from Jesus into her body and shut down the bleeding. In the blink of an eye, she was healed because she had faith in the Healer.
Jesus asked, “Who touched my robe?” He felt that power had gone from Him. I believe He wanted to learn who had shown faith by touching Him for healing, and He wanted that person to be seen as an example of what faith in God can do. The lady fell to her knees and revealed what she had done. Jesus called her Daughter because it is with faith that we are saved and become children of God.
Seek the power emanating from Jesus that heals our bodies and our souls. She had a new life, again enjoying her family, friends, and religious worship. Jesus healed her physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually. That is the power we all need in our lives each day. Through faith, prayer, and partaking of the bread of life, meaning God’s words and Jesus’s love, we heal in ways seen and unseen.
Amen.
