Mark 16: 1-4 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they could go and anoint him. Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they went to the tomb at sunrise. They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone from the entrance to the tomb for us?” Looking up, they noticed that the stone—which was very large—had been rolled away.
Many times in life, we face what seem like insurmountable odds. Situations appear impossible, and we spend much time figuring out how to make the impossible probable. We forget that if God calls us to work, he will open doors for us, literally and figuratively.
The women followed Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus as they buried Jesus’s body in a tomb so they knew where He was buried. The women needed to complete the anointing that began at Bethany in Mark 14: 3-9, when Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, came with an alabaster jar of pure and expensive fragrant oil of nard and poured it on his head. John 12:1-4 reveals that she also anointed Jesus’s feet, wiping them with her hair, filling the house with a fragrant scent. Jesus says in Mark 14:9 that wherever the gospel was preached in the future, her actions towards Him would be proclaimed to the whole world, and it is still being done today.
It was apropos that she filled the house with a fragrant and pleasing smell because Ephesians 5:2 states, “Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.” But, the women knew that a better, fuller anointing was due to their Savior, Lord, and Friend.
The women walked alone in the early morning. But even as they wondered about the dilemma, Mary Magdalene and the other women kept walking toward the tomb. They did not allow the possibility of difficulties to prevent them from finishing the job appointed to them, for Mark 15:41 reminds us that when He was in Galilee, the women would follow Him and help Him. He had healed and shown them compassion, and they would not fail Him.
When they arrived, God had made way for them, and the stone was rolled away, which gave them access to the body, but Jesus had risen and was not there. The tomb was empty! Praise the Lord! The women saw this firsthand and were directed by angels to go and tell the men of this beautiful news.
When we remember that God is our Provider and Sustainer, we can do the work He calls us to do. He will open doors and equip us for the tasks, just as He did for Mary Magdalene and the other women who were faithful to the end despite potential obstacles. Keep moving to where God is leading, not worrying about how He will solve it or when He will do it. Just know He will provide all you need. I am a living witness.
Amen.
