The Lord Has Need of Our Skills: A Devotional

Matthew 21: 1-3 When they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives, Jesus then sent two disciples, telling them, “Go into the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied there, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to Me. If anyone says anything to you, you should say that the Lord needs them, and immediately he will send them.”

We sometimes wonder if God can use us, considering we may not be as eloquent as the preacher, as learned as the Sunday School teacher, or as gifted to sing or play an instrument as the choir members and musicians. So, we sit in the pews as spectators, leaving all the work to others more equipped to do the job. In most organizations, including religious institutions, twenty percent of the people do 80 percent of the work.

But, when Jesus went to Jerusalem to be crucified for the world’s sins, He knew what he needed to make the required entry. He sent two disciples to locate a donkey and a colt, for Jesus was entering not as a conquering king, which required a grand horse or warhorse, but as a suffering servant. Riding on a donkey symbolized that He came in peace, not war, and as humble as He could. Still, the people were so excited that Jesus would possibly defeat the Roman occupiers and restore the kingdom of Israel. That was not His to do.

In riding on a donkey and colt, Jesus avoided giving false hope, which would have worked if people had stopped, looked, and understood. Their disappointment was so great that by the end of the week, they went from “Hosanna” to “Crucify Him!”

God always knows what He needs to spread the Good News and save people. When he lays on your heart a calling, remember that the donkey and the colt followed Jesus’s lead. They didn’t try to steal the show! They were chosen for a reason, and so are we. God will equip us with the talents and attitudes needed to do His will in the land of the living. Let us not be spectators but also realistically evaluate our abilities and pray to God to provide the education and humility to do His will on earth. Help expand the percentage of people working for the Lord so that others do not suffer burnout while we sit still.

Amen.
