The Ideal Home is Filled with Love and Peace.

Daily writing prompt
What does your ideal home look like?

It doesn’t matter if the house is a ranch or split-level because neither the exterior nor the furnishings inside make a house into a home. The love between the residents creates a peaceful place to return to at the end of the day. I love to see photos and artwork of a home in the darkness with a light burning brightly, beckoning the residents to enter and find rest and soul-healing joy.

As a child, I changed homes three times in four years, and the lasting effect has been a desire to remain in places and relationships after they ceased to be safe for me. Children don’t care about what kind of house they live in as long as someone there gives them feelings of being valued and worthy of that parental figure’s time and efforts. It is when you know you are unwanted that beautiful furniture or furnishings can’t transform a house into a home.

I define home as a feeling rather than as a piece of real estate. Home is contentment, safety, shelter from the storms of life, and where I find a sense of belonging. So, the house could be a three-room apartment shared by six or even one room. Because of the lack of a real home early in life, it is more precious to me. I just came home yesterday after spending a day and a half in the hospital with breathing issues.

As the car rolled into the garage, I wasn’t thinking of the furniture or the rugs. I craved the peace that comes from sleeping in my own bed with a loving husband next to me who missed me and wouldn’t let go of my hand. That’s the love that brings peace and rest to our souls and reminds us that the ideal home is one where one is appreciated and seen as valuable, worthy of someone’s time and efforts, and needed.

We have a responsibility to fill our homes with love and light that draws those who bring us joy to a place of retreat and hope from the bombardments of the world. It is a place called HOME.
