The first impression I want to leave with people is a sense of their value and worth. I want people to feel special and as if they are the most important person in the world to me. I want my smile to denote that I see their humanity. I seek to let people know that they make a difference, so I love to make people laugh and feel at ease, whether as a preacher or teacher.
I always like to ask people, even when being interviewed, what they love about their jobs or how their day is going. I found that when you take the focus off yourself and place it on the other person, they are grateful to have the light on themselves. Then, they see you differently, as they can see your humanity and kindness.
It is true that you only get one time to make good first impression. So, I try to ensure that more of my humanity is displayed than my intellectual abilities. Humor is a great way for people to relax and really see you, and when you ask about their lives, a bond is created that can move mountains of perceived differences out of the way.
