We Have Snow! It’s Beautiful, But Few Know How to Drive in It!

We only get snow in our part of Georgia maybe once a year! It is always beautiful, but because we are not used to it, accidents and wrecked cars end up everywhere. Northerners who have moved here believe that they can still go wherever they wish. They laugh at us for closing schools and offices. But, when they encounter Southern drivers determined to not let the snow stop them, chaos and havoc result.

When I lived and taught for one year in Illinois, snow was a constant in the winter, and I loved looking at it from the front window. But, I did not like to drive in it, because I am used to the car stopping when you apply the brakes. However, in snow, braking means to prepare to slide a few feet until the tires catch traction. It is scary as all get out.

So, I don’t drive much anyway, and I am certainly not going to with a couple of inches of snow on the ground. Douglas usually goes out every day to play disc golf, and even he plans to stay in today, probably because he doesn’t want to shovel the snow from in front of the garage and then try to go to the corner. Our subdivision has lots of hills, small and large, so it is doubly hard to drive in the snow. Whereas the major highway will get cleared at some point, the side streets will take longer, so he went to the store yesterday for all of our potential needs.

Snow is beautiful to see, and it comes so seldom that the kids love it, youngsters and oldsters. I want to go out and play in it, but the last thing I need is to fall or to get super chilled, so I will stay in. It is expected that ice will form by the end of the day, and that will make matters worse. So, it’s the treadmill in the basement for exercise for a couple or more days, because it’s not worth a wreck to go to the gym. I would rather see the scale numbers rise than chance hurting someone or inconveniencing them by my hubris in driving in snow.

Stay safe, Y’all.
