A business where one doesn’t seek to make a profit would be considered a crazy business idea. That is the goal that people have in mind when they think of starting a business. Why even expend all that energy to showcase one’s talents, if not to see the financial benefits? After all, generosity doesn’t pay the bills, right?
But, I suggest a business where the main goal is meeting the needs of a sector of the community, such as writing letters for those who can’t express themselves, teaching someone to read, or spending a hour listening to someone’s story who is lonely and has no one else.
I would call my enterprise, “One-Hour of Need.” I would be sure to create a space where people are comfortable, with wonderfully colorful and whimsical furniture in various rooms. I would ensure confidentiality by having multiple doors for entering and leaving.
My vision statement would read: One-Hour of Need is a place for those who are too embarrassed or have too little funds to seek other forms of help. It is a place to relax and know that you are cared for. I see your humanity and will respect every word spoken in the confines of the business. I seek to give everyone a place to release the pains, hurts, and disappointments of this life.
I will finance the business through my writing, creating a blog wherein I write beauty pieces that people want to own. No AI, just pure human ingenuity. I know it would be hard, but I think that the crazier the idea, the more humane, particularly because for so many businesses, profit is the bottom line at the expense of humanity and kindness.
Just a crazy idea!
