I love New Year’s Day. It is a day when you realize the old year has finally passed. Just maybe this one will be better! So, a new year signals opportunities for change and new beginnings. If the previous year was filled with sickness and unhappiness, you think, “I will be so glad to see the end of THIS year! It’s been the worst! ” Then, when you awake on January 1, there is renewed hope! I believe that is why so many go to parties or to Times Square, counting down the moments until the new day dawns.
For me, it is a better holiday than others because everyone can participate, which is different than Valentine’s Day when only lovers celebrate, or Easter, wherein only believers in Jesus celebrate. It beats Christmas because no gifts need to be bought. It is a day for reflection, remembering the things you survived last year, and a moment to believe in possibilities that seemed improbable in the previous year, because there was so much confusion or times of trial.
So, it is the holiday I love best. When the clock strikes midnight, the guns and fireworks go off! I am usually at home, on the floor, lest any stray bullets come through the windows, as it seems all of my neighbors’ homes are protected by Smith and Wesson. But despite the noise, the joy and optimism that seem to fill every heart and home make this a glorious holiday!
