Finding Comfort Amidst Suffering Isn’t Easy, But I Try

Gibbs Gardens, Ballground, GA

Dealing with the aftermath of a fall in your seventies is tough, as 70-something bodies don’t recuperate as fast as 20-something bodies. Nearly two months after falling in Vienna, I am still suffering from trauma to my mouth, which leaves me frustrated and uncomfortable. But life is too short to allow the suffering to steal all of your joy. So, I find time each day for the activities I love. I watch murder mysteries on Acorn and Britbox, or I read about murder mysteries with one of the hundred or more books on my Kindle.

I find that the sense of justice that murder mysteries bring to me helps me avoid having pity parties all day. The good guys always get the bad guys, so the world seems orderly to me, which prevents me from thinking that nothing is good in the world. That comforts me. It is some kind of assurance from the universe that this, too, will pass, just as every episode ends favorably.

I also find comfort in word puzzles, because my brain is occupied with something other than the pain. If I could eat on both sides of my mouth, my go-to comfort foods would be ambrosia apples, a hot pastrami sandwich on rye bread stacked with double meat and cheese, or pulled pork sandwiches slathered in barbecue sauce. But, alas, I can’t bite on anything on the right side of my mouth until I receive a permanent crown.

Comfort is in the eye of the beholder. What comforts me may aggravate the symptoms of others. But it’s essential to find comfort in any way possible while suffering, so that life can be enjoyed in small ways. It makes getting up in the morning a worthwhile endeavor, despite the pain and suffering.
