Love may not get better with age, but having someone love you despite the wrinkles and physical complaints is the greatest joy. We come into the world alone, but our most ardent wish is to share this life with someone before we leave this world alone. In the last chapter, we walk slower, and the hands we hold are spotted and a bit shaky, but we relish in the nearness. Every day together is a gift and a blessing that can be snatched away at any moment.
Love that has gotten past so many wrong words spoken and insensitive actions demonstrates the power of and the need for forgiveness in relationships, so that love isn’t prematurely lost. The days are spent moving forward, not looking backward at old grievances. Life is lived to savor every smile and kiss, not remember every wrong committed.
Mature love has ripened over the years, as shared memories of hard times survived together arouse in us gratefulness for every trial and tribulation that God brought us through. For every prayer for more time that was answered, we offer praise and thanksgiving.
Ecclesiastes 4:11-12 states, “Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Mature love binds two people together, and with the Lord as the third cord, the vows made in younger days will last until death do us part.
