Using Your Gift to Serve Others: A Devotional

1 Peter 4:10-11 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.

I have the gift of encouragement. I don’t flatter, but I do let people know that I see their value and worth. I went to Urgent Care last Friday. The young nurse who took X-rays of my back and hip was so professional and patient. I was moving slowly, but she never appeared agitated or impatient. I thanked her for her patience. Then, she also had to give me an injection, and she was gentle and kind. Before she left the room, I told her that she had just the right personality for the job, and I thanked her for her kindness. She smiled and answered that they were there to take care of me.

We are called to use the spiritual gifts that God gives us through the Holy Spirit in us to serve people in ways that touch their hearts and bring glory to God. I have always thought that people need to be encouraged to believe they have value and worth, and that the work they do matters to others. We don’t all have the same gifts, and that is perfect, because in this life, we need so much love and support that one person couldn’t do it all. Each person has their own special and unique gift to share.

Let us use our spiritual gifts today to bring joy to someone’s heart, testifying to God’s love for them through our actions and words. That brings glory to God, as we serve each other in ways that demonstrate a heart for people.
