I Have Always Wanted to Soar Like A Bird, Living Life to the Fullest

Daily writing prompt
What’s something you would attempt if you were guaranteed not to fail.

I would attempt skydiving or wingsuit flying. What it must feel like to feel you are one with the wind! To soar like birds, and to fly and see the beauty of the world below. It would be such freedom to ride the wind like the birds.

If I knew that I wouldn’t fail, that the parachute would open every time, or the wingsuit wouldn’t malfunction, it would be great, as Psalm 55:6 states, “To fly away and be at rest.” To have wings that allow us to find a space where no one else lives, our place, and linger there, away from the noise, would be ideal. I still might try skydiving for my 75th birthday!

But, as a child, I was constantly reminded of what could happen if I tried to ride a bicycle, swim, or skate. I grew up with many fears because I was made aware of the possible consequences of failure. I never learned to do any of these things. But in my fifties, I made my first international flight, trembling all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. At 73, when my husband and I travel, I try some activities that I never would have attempted in my twenties or forties.

Traveling to Madrid and Geneva alone taught me that life is about taking risks. If I had never gone to the top of the French Alps, I wouldn’t appreciate the magnificence of snow-covered mountains. I would have missed so much of the joy in my life if I had worried about failing or considered all of the possible consequences. Traveling solo, I had to depend on myself and even once had to defend myself, but, oh, the joy of the places I have seen and the people I have met! Thank you, Jesus!

I tell people to take the path not yet laid out for you, and you will be rewarded by what you find along the way about yourself: your courage, perseverance, and determination. It’s the only way to really live life to the fullest. Never let the chance of failure stop you from living your dreams.
