I was in the eighth grade when I was chosen for the Junior Honor Society. I was to be inducted into the society during a school program. My aunt bought me stockings and a pair of low-heeled shoes. I was accustomed to wearing sneakers or loafers. The stockings were cinnamon-toned because hosiery manufacturers didn’t make stockings in the skin tones of black women. The ones bought were as close as Aunt Ann could get.
I wore the stockings and heels with pride, thinking of myself as an adult woman. I was out of little-girl shoes and allowed to wear hosiery instead of anklets. It felt funny, though, and I think I got a run down the stockings before the program, but I still walked up and got my certificate with my head held high.
It’s funny how something as simple as socks and heels can make you feel grown-up, particularly because when we are younger, we want to look older. Of course, now that I am a 70-something, I only wear stockings and heels on Sundays to church. I am more comfortable in socks and sneakers. Isn’t it amazing how we go full circle in life?
