My husband and I have never taken a cruise, although many of friends swear by them. It is the thought of so much water and being far from land. But, when I was visiting in Porto, Portugal, I would sit on the beach and watch those beautiful ships come into port. They move on the ocean like elegant dancers. It is so wonderful to watch them go through the breakwaters. To see them leave is just as enchanting. It boggles my mind that something that large can navigate on the ocean so effortlessly. What a great example of technology and how gravity works.
We have been talking about taking our first cruise, but not on one of the huge cruise ships that carry thousands of passengers. We are thinking of a Vikings Tour in Europe, where there are fewer than 200 passengers, and where you enter into ports and stay a day or two. In Budapest last year, we took an hour-long cruise on the Danube, and several of those small cruise ships came into port. They are long rather than huge, and it seemed every passenger had a balcony.
So, we are researching one of these cruises, maybe down the Danube or the Rhine Rivers. I think I would like these tours with many activities off the ship, rather than stuck on a ship with thousands of people. These cruises seem a better chance of getting to know people and to experience great cities. It would be our first cruise, and I hope that we would enjoy it as much as our friends seem to believe.
