We each leave a heritage, whether it is positive or negative,
That will impact the thinking and lives of those we will never meet.
It may be a favorite family recipe or wild stories that connect generations,
Or will it be the remembrance of accomplishing an impossible feat?
We should live each day thinking of what our actions leave behind.
Will it be a notoriety for having committed grave and hurtful sins,
Or will the memories of our life be of the good that we did,
As we strived to help others to achieve significant wins?
Written for the Weekend Writing Prompt #440 from Sammi Cox: Heritage in 97 words. I thought of visiting Sullivan’s Island near Hilton Head, SC, where there is a great history and cultural center on Black life, including the story of Robert Smalls, who bought himself and his family out of slavery.
