Time is Indifferent to Our Needs: We Must Live Each Moment Fruitfully

Daily writing prompt
Do you need time?

Time moves on, regardless of the need for more time by all of us. Everyone has experienced days when you wish you had more time to complete a project ot tell someone you loved them. As I near my seventy-fourth birthday, I often wonder whether I would like more time to travel to all the places I want to see or to complete some work I’ve never even started. But I realize that time is indifferent to my needs. I can’t ask for more or go back and use the time that has passed.

Time is finite, in that you only get 24 hours in a day; no more and no less. What you didn’t do yesterday will not add minutes to your day to complete today. That’s why it is so important to live each moment fruitfully. I don’t mean you have to be doing something every moment of the day; that is not a healthy way to live. I mean that if there are activities you want to accomplish or places you want to go, don’t put them off until a better day or time. Do it while you can. Yes, I understand that sometimes we don’t have the money to do whatever we want at a specific time, but we can save a little here and a little there, so that one day, if we are still in the land of the living, we can go to the places of our dreams.

I think the saddest times when I hear of someone’s dying is right after they retire. Most of the time, individuals have put off doing things they hoped to complete after working for years. There is the belief that time will be there when we are ready for it, but that isn’t an attribute of time; it waits for no one. So, the question today is, do I need time? I guess we all do, because we have dreams and bucket lists. But saying I need time as if I can order the day to extend for me or request that time stand still until I find the right spouse or the perfect job or am ready to retire has no value.

Our needs do not affect time in any way. Instead, we are the servants of time, for we must adjust to it, not the other way around. We have to make the most of the time each day and treat it with respect if we want to complete as many of our life’s dreams as possible. Time passes, with or without our paying attention. It is when we near the end of our time that, too often, we finally comprehend that we wasted time, spending too much of it believing that when we need it, time will be there waiting.

Live fruitfully today. Tell someone you love them, not waiting for the best time or until you see them again face-to-face. Take small trips to places while you have the time, not waiting until you can take a plane to a European destination. Work today toward writing that book, composing music, or improving your diet for better health. You don’t know when time will run out, as it will for each of us. No one remains in the land of the living forever. Time will move on, regardless of your need for it. It is the sad truth.
