When The Grocery Store Ladies Know Your Name, You Might Go to the Store Too Much

My husband goes to the grocery store or Costco near me every day! I am amazed when I accompany him to Kroger that the women who work the self-checkout line know him so well. It is like they are old friends, and he knows their names and asks after different ailments. My daughter says he has a shopping addiction, but I think he just wants to feel useful, now that he has retired, or maybe just get out of the house with me.

The top five items he buys are bread, fruits like bananas, blackberries, apples, and grapes, ham or deli meats, creamer, and canned vegetables. We keep a whiteboard on the refrigerator to write down whatever we need from the store. He takes a picture on his phone each day and heads out to buy those items. It seems we are never out of anything for long. Thankfully, we have a freezer section.

I argue with him that our grocery bill is too high for two seventy-somethings. He spends anywhere from $750 to $1000 a month at grocery stores! He tells me that, according to Consumer Reports, that is just the right amount, but I think I might need to research that myself. But the good news is that we are never out of food. When he wants to make soup, stew, or chili, he generally has all the ingredients, especially white beans, garbanzo beans, and diced tomatoes, which seem to be the foundation of his soups, which are always so good that I call him the “Soup Whisperer.”

We keep large grocery bags in both cars so he is prepared. The first time I heard him call one of the grocery store women by her first name, and she asked after him by name, I wondered if he had met her before. He said no, so I knew then that he goes to the store absolutely too much. But he is happy, feels that he is doing his duty, knows where every item is in our store and Costco, and we don’t need to eat out much. So, as his wife, I just know that each time he walks through the door, there will be groceries to put away. That’s my job!
