I Want A World That My Great-Grandchildren Can Flourish In

With the attack on Venezuela and the continuing wars in Gaza and Ukraine, I fear that a world war will start sooner rather than later. The disregard for the Constitution and the lack of checks and balances on the policies being created and enforced in this country, including disrespect for the rule of law, leave us in a nation slowly losing its democratic principles.

It is a scary time. I am even afraid of repercussions for writing about such things on my blog, but I fear for my great-grandchildren, ages 2-18, who are growing up in a different America than I did. Having seen and been the recipient of the gains made by women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community over the last 50 years, to witness the return of overt racism, sexism, homophobia, and xenophobia is discouraging and leaves me wondering what kind of nation my great-grandchildren will work, play, and search for love in.

I want a world for them where peace on earth exists because love abounds, not hate and fearmongering. I want them judged by their abilities, not their skin color. I want them to be able to present themselves in ways that others may not understand, but to have the freedom to be unique and special without fear of being hurt or even killed. I want a democratic world where women make decisions about their bodies, although I am against abortion, for personal reasons. I want a world where protesters can criticize inequality and injustice without worrying about being jailed like criminals.

I want for them the United States that we were on our way to being, where gains were still being made to ensure that every American had an equal chance for a job, regardless of race, gender, social class, or sexual orientation. I hope that my grandchildren do not experience a United States that looks like that of my great-grandparents and other ancestors, one of near hopelessness in being seen as human beings and of segregation and degradation because of their skin color.

What a great gift it would be to see our nation once again not such a scary place to live for people of color, gays and lesbians, immigrants, and transgender people. A country where healthcare and education are affordable and available for all people would be a gift that guarantees my great-grandchildren a life better than mine, which is what progress is meant to be.
