I canceled Facebook and LinkedIn today because I was spending too much time reading on them, hours that I could be doing work or writing my book. I would check Facebook to see if a child or grandchild had written something or posted a picture, and two hours later, I was still reading posts and watching reel and reel. I decided it was mentally healthier for me to cancel my subscription.
I will find another way to see cute pictures of great-grandchildren or grandchildren. I wonder why you need permission from others to take your picture in a professional setting, but parents and grandparents feel comfortable sharing their children’s and grandchildren’s lives without asking their children, even though those pictures may embarrass them someday or cost them a job. I may be petty, or it may be a generational difference of opinion on what is appropriate and dangerous.
I am not sure what Facebook was originally meant to be. But it became a place where you are bombarded with the vitriol between people of different opinions that made me feel that hate is now so acceptable that it’s sometimes difficult to find that love for my neighbor that is required of me as a Christian.
So, I canceled both today, and I long stopped looking at X and never joined Threads. I believe that people feel invisible and need Facebook and others to ensure that the world knows they exist. That means the world has a problem with being neighborly. In a world where people seldom know their neighbors, maybe Facebook is their only way to feel relevant. Unfortunately, I spend too much time reading about folks I don’t know, judging them, but I never comment. I have so many things I want to accomplish, and losing hours a day to such distractions isn’t healthy for me. You’ve got to know when to fold them!

I post my stories on Facebook in the nostalgic groups. I have great success with getting the word out and though it is small, I get paid by Facebook.
