With much desperation in her voice, she asked her husband, “How are we to keep them interested in staying home to care for us when they can see all the places they could go on the pole up the street?” He told her not to worry, for the kids were not even teenagers, yet. He was sure that between the time they became old enough to be aware of a great big world out there more exciting than their little village, the two of them would have come up with ways to manipulate their children’s sense of guilt and shame.

Whoa…manipulation?

Oh, yeah. I have a friend whose mother will not accept her new husband in her house. She was used to manipulating her to do what she wanted her to do. But, now with a husband, she seems to have found the courage to not allow her mother to use her sickness to manipulate her into doing according to Mama’s will, and I am glad for her.
