When Playing Days are Over

From the gridiron to the rocking chair

Is a roundabout that I would not suggest.

The money was good and fame even better,

But was it worth the pain that steals my rest?

That’s the question that so many ask me,

When they see that I can find no relief.

Let me say that it was the difference

Between poverty and eating roast beef.

So, I’m glad that I did not know the costs

Of playing to my body, mind, and my soul.

For, I have a legacy to leave to my kids,

Despite the high costs I paid for the toll.

Written for the Three Things Challenge from The Haunted Wordsmith, February 3, 2019: rocking chair, roast beef, and roundabout. Ragtag  prompt is Gridiron
