You’ll Never Be Smarter Than Your Mama

I lied to save myself from the consequences of my actions,

But my mother seemed to have eyes and ears all over the community.

Just when I thought that I was safe and had outsmarted the old gal,

She found me and advised me that I would not get away with impunity.

I could not believe that she already knew of my little dalliance

With the boy I thought was the most handsome in our town.

But before I had left the scene of that wonderful kiss,

My Mama had been apprised of my new-found renown.

Written for the Weekend Writing Prompt #323 from Sammiscribbles: outsmart in 96 words. I was reminded about how my mother seemed to know everything I did before I got home. Neighbors knew each other back then, and when they asked if you were someone’s child, you knew you were in trouble.
