He wiped the dust from the stairs before we sat down.
His disdain for me masqueraded as a concern.
So when he uttered those four dreaded words,
I knew I wouldn’t like what I was about to learn.
No matter the slant he tried to put on the words,
I knew that my heart was about to be broken.
He leaned close to me and listed all of my faults.
My face vermillion, I waited until his words were spoken,
And I told him I won’t apologize for the me that I am,
I disagreed that a girl can be too lean or too smart.
I’d rather be alone all of my days on the earth
Than compromise my intellect to win a boy’s heart.
Written for the Fandango Flash Fiction Challenge #231. Ragtag Daily Prompt is Vermillion. Word of the Day Challenge is Dust. The three prompts from Three Things Challenge #M413 are list, lean, and slant.

Nice interpretation and incorporation of the other prompt words. 👍
