Nurses are the heart of medicine. I greatly respect the women and men who dedicate their lives to the sick and helpless. The nurses spend the most time with patients, caring for our needs while encouraging us as surgeries or procedures await. They work long shifts, up to 12 hours at a time, and still are capable of compassion at the end of the day.
I studied to be a Licenced Practical Nurse in my early twenties. I did great in the classroom. But when I had to do the work, I learned that seeing blood gave me chills. I had to quit the program because it was not my calling. Because I know what is involved and the mental and emotional needs of the job, I think that nurses are one of the most vital parts of the medical establishment and deserve every penny they are paid and even more.
As more men enter nursing, it is evident that caring and gentleness aren’t exclusively female assets. As more women become doctors, it is obvious that females always could do the job. I believed all along that the nurses were the ones who truly helped the healing process with their kindness and love of their profession. We saw this more deeply with the Covid pandemic. I salute the brave women and men who serve in the trenches of the medical profession, doing the emotional work that leads to healing bodies and minds,

They are the heroes
