I was the recipient of an incredible act of kindness. I was in the local Goodwill to look for summer clothes. I was unaware that someone had seen me and decided to perpetuate an act of kindness to me. But after the cashier had given me my total, she informed me that a man had already paid for my purchase. I was stunned, and I asked her to point him out so that I could express my gratitude, but he had left the store.
Douglas and I ran out of the store trying to find him, but we couldn’t catch him. I was amazed that someone had felt moved to do such a kindness to me. Like other acts of kindness that I have witnessed, it brought tears to my eyes. Something about watching people being fully human to another person reminds me that we all need each other. I think it is that feeling that we recognize each other’s humanity and understand that everyone sometimes needs help.
Watching cars stop to help someone whose car has broken down, I feel so moved by their generosity. Seeing someone offer to give another person the money needed to pay for all of their groceries rather than having to decide what they can leave at the store makes me proud to know that we are capable as human beings of such goodness.
Kindness, to me, exemplifies the best in us, as it is the opposite of being indifferent to other people’s sufferings. We need each other to survive on this planet that sometimes feels like a celestial prison with all of the suffering, trials, and tribulations. I had the money to pay for my clothes that day, but that someone thought that maybe I didn’t and wanted to help me was astonishing, and I have tried since to find ways to pay it forward. Kindness brings tears to my eyes because it’s not shown enough.
Had I been on the road to Jericho and saw the Samaritan man stop to help the injured man, I would have teared up. I hope that I would have also stopped and helped the Samaritan man in his kindness toward someone he didn’t know. To the man who paid for my clothes, whoever you are, “Thank you for seeing my humanity!”

You’ve such a sweet and kind heart Regina. No wonder that person wanted to help.
