You Can’t Beat A Good Book in Your Hands!

Daily writing prompt
How do you relax?

As much as I like my Kindle, when I have had a stressful day or week, there is no substitute for relaxing the mind by picking up a good book and escaping into another place and other people’s lives. Since I was is child, I have found reading to be my hiding place from the craziness of life. The homes that I lived in as a child did not have money for books for pleasure. School books were free, and I loved reading them, but it was in the sixth grade when I discovered other books.

In the sixth grade, I went to the library at school and borrowed a book titled The Case of the Tarnished Trophy, a mystery. I still remember the thrill of just sitting in a chair and descending into the town. It was like I was walking beside the characters and sharing in their lives. I was amazed at the ending, and I couldn’t wait to read the next book. Walking into the library was like being in a candy store, wherein you don’t know where to start for the sheer amount of choices.

What was even better is that while I read the book, I didn’t think about my mother and father being absent from my life. I didn’t think about having changed homes three times in four years. In the moments that I was enthralled by the story, I was joyful and content, with no worries but finding out who the culprit was. My mind was relaxed and free to just be entertained.

Today, I have probably a hundred books on my Kindle to read, but over the last few months, I have rediscovered the joy of holding a book in my hands, especially the hardbacks. When I have finished with them, I take them to the local library, so that they may be enjoyed by many people. That’s something you can’t do on Kindle, or I don’t know how. But, the thrill of holding a book has never left me, and you can’t beat a good mystery or novel for freeing the mind, traveling to faraway places, and escaping the trials and struggles of life for a little while. There are few things more enjoyable!

Happy reading!

  1. This is me “I have rediscovered the joy of holding a book in my hands, especially the hardbacks.
