Crowned with Glory and Honor: Sunday Devotion

At the Rodin Museum in Paris, France, May 2023

Psalm 8: 3-5 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit[ him? For You have made him a little lower than [the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor.

Human beings often underestimate their value and worth. Yet, King David understood that the Lord God sees us in all our magnificence and beauty, for He made us a little lower than angels. David was enthralled that the Creator who made the heavens, the moon, and the stars visited humankind and was mindful of our trials and tribulations.

We matter to God! I believe King David was amazed that the greatest force in the universe could care for us lowly human beings, particularly with our sins and flaws. But God sees us as we can and ought to be, not in our sinfulness, because our sins are forgiven through the shed blood of Jesus.

We are crowned with honor, meaning high respect and glory, which refers to high renown in God’s eyes. We must strive to live as God sees us. Gideon, one of the judges of the Jews, was amazed when an angel of the Lord called him “a mighty warrior.” He saw himself as the least of all the Jews, with his clan as the lowest clan and he the least of the clan. But God saw in Gideon the glory and honor that He bestowed on him, promising and keeping His Promise to be with Gideon and bring him victory.

Today, let us remember that we are God’s creations, crowned with honor and glory, for God sees us as capable of so much more than we can think or imagine. Ephesians 2:10 states, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” It is the goodness that God sees in us, that He imbued in us, that explains why he is mindful of us and visits us. He loves us with the love of a Father and our Creator.

Let us look at each person and see the honor and glory that their Creator placed in them. Recognize the humanity in all people and be kind to them.

Amen.
