Life is More Valuable than Silver or Gold

Daily writing prompt
What would you do if you lost all your possessions?

When I had to leave my belongings behind and escape with my life, I was just thankful to be alive. I knew I could get more things and stuff in time, but I had only one life. It wasn’t worth having many clothes or a beautiful home to continue being abused physically and emotionally.

That is why I try not to get attached to my possessions. I like having a nice car and a lovely home, but I never lose sight of the fact that a disaster could come at any time, and it would all be gone in the blink of an eye. I remember once wanting a Corvette more than anything else. I was willing to work overtime and seven days a week to buy it.

I thought that driving a Vette was the ultimate means to demonstrate how far I had come from being raised in poverty and wearing the cheapest clothes to school. Wait until they see me in my Vette! They will have to revise their thoughts on my value! Of course, being less than 5 feet tall, I couldn’t reach the peddles and be comfortable driving when I got in a Corvette. It hurt my heart so much.

Then, one day, I passed a junk car lot, and I saw every type of car there, including Vettes, and I was reminded that everything man-made is temporary. I saw the insanity of loving a car so much or of finding your value and worth in the things you own. I realized that what was more important were the people you love and who are there for you in every season of your life, good and bad. You can’t replace these significant others, for they are more precious than gold or silver. Love them while you can. Losing my youngest son taught me that you don’t know how long someone will live, so appreciate people, not things.

Yes, living comfortably is great, and working hard and having a good car and home is wonderful. But, if you escape with your life in the midst of a disaster or a bad relationship, praise God and trust that He will see that you have what you need. King David understood this when he stated in Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want.” Things are not more valuable than people. We come into the world with nothing in our hands and leave it the same way.
