The words of Proverbs 18:22 state, “The man who finds a wife finds a treasure, and he receives favor from the LORD.” Not to add to the scriptures, but I believe it matters whether the mate you find is good, as Proverbs 21:9 declares that it is better to live on the corner of a roof alone than to share a house with a quarrelsome woman.
October 3, 2023, was the 20th anniversary of the day that Douglas sent me a note on a Christian dating site. I started to ignore it because he was a white male. But I read his profile and was amazed at our similarities. I soon discovered that he had a wonderful sense of humor and compassion as we sent notes about whether he realized I was a black female. He had seen my profile picture (duh!), and he still saw my potential as a treasure in his life. Having been raised in the segregated South in Tennessee, I was gobsmacked that a white male saw my value and worth.
Nearly six weeks later, he and I went to dinner, and from the first moment, I knew he was a one-in-a-million find. When my oldest son rebelled against our pending marriage, I told him, “I have waited nearly fifty years to be loved this way, and I will not give him up because of his skin color.” I spent that Thanksgiving with his children, all four of whom I still love, as though I gave birth to them.
Nineteen years later, I still know that he is the best find, and his continued love and joy in me as his wife every day reminds me that God supplies all of our needs according to the riches of his glory in Jesus Christ. What a find, a treasure, and the evidence of the favor of God in my life! I don’t take him for granted. I tell him daily that he is loved because that is his love language. You can show Douglas love all day, but he needs to hear it. I am the opposite, needing to be shown, and even small things like knowing when I run out of my kind of bread and going to the store to buy it touch my heart with thanksgiving and gratefulness.
