My Castle for an Oreo!

Bloganuary writing prompt
What snack would you eat right now?

I love Oreos. To me, they are the best cookie ever made. Now that they come in so many flavors, it’s hard to leave the store without a bag of the new ones. Thankfully, I have a husband who is more sensible, and he knows that I have NO control once I open a bag of Oreos. Once, I would grab a bag and a book, and it was ON! I wouldn’t stop until I reached in and there were no more to eat. I was at least 20 pounds heavier then.

But, when I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2006, that type of irresponsible eating had to stop. Yet, I simply love those brown, cream-filled cookies. I buy them, and my husband hides them. No, he is not being controlling over me; we mutually agreed that I shouldn’t know where they are, especially on days when the darkness of depression hits. When I need a boost, I simply ask for two or three Oreos, he gets them for me, and I am in his debt!

I would lie if I said that I never go looking for them sometimes when I need comfort food. But, I have stopped searching for them, realizing that my health is paramount. But, if you asked me now, in the midst of teaching two college courses and taking two graduate courses at the university, what snack I would love right now, I would still say, “Bring me three Oreos!” You can’t beat them for putting a smile on my face. Of course, I have a temporary crown on my upper tooth, so Oreos are out until I get a permanent crown. You have to eat them just right: open them, eat the cream out, and then eat the two cookies.

Thank you, Nabisco!

  1. There are so many foods that call to me. High sugar products are definitely something that call to me, and I do well, when I avoid them. If I eat a little, I want all of it, so I try to abstain. I can understand the call of Oreos. Blessings!
