Having Tree-Like Faith: Sunday Devotion

Hilton Head, South Carolina, 2023

Jeremiah 17:7-8:  But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”

Psalm 1: 1-3 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.

Having faith in God that is steadfast and immovable requires us to be like a tree planted by the rivers of water. It means staying dependent on the Living Water of the Holy Spirit that the Lord promised and delivered at Pentecost. We learn to have a tree-like faith by reading and meditating on God’s words daily. Romans 15:4 states, “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.”

In difficult times, when trials and tribulations abound, remembering God’s promises and His faithfulness to them helps us continue to hope, regardless of how hopeless the situation appears. The fruit of our faith and confidence in God is victory over our enemies and in all our battles.

So, today, let’s begin cultivating a tree-like faith, remaining in God’s words, letting them be written on the tables of our hearts so that we might not sin against Him. This kind of faith is fruitful and never fails us.

Amen.
