What an Awesome God We Serve: Monday Devotional

Paris, France, May 2023

Psalm 65: 5-8 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.

Three of my favorite entities are mountains, oceans, and trees. I marvel at them because I know that only the Lord God Almighty can make them, and man cannot clone or duplicate them. Something is soul-affirming and healing about sitting and looking at the handiwork of our awesome and mighty God.

When troubles assail me and seem insurmountable, I remember that I serve the one true God and that the earth and everything in it belong to Him. I reflect on the fact that He made us, not ourselves (Psalm 100:3). Then, I remind myself to not worry and to put my hope in God.

Take time today to appreciate the beauty of the earth, even if it is gloomy outside. Consider that the sun and the moon continued to do what we expect of them without our doing anything to motivate them. God set them in the sky to be a light for us, and in their constancy, we can see that we serve an awesome and wonderful God who is still our Redeemer, Deliverer, Rescuer, and Hope.

Psalm 30:5 reminds us that weeping from our trials and troubles may last all night, but morning always comes because God planned it that way. Night can last a long time, and our troubles seem as if they will never end, but when morning comes, troubles will end, and joy will fill our hearts and lives. Just look at the wonders of nature and be reminded of the awesomeness of our God.

Amen.
