Walk the Road to Emmaus with Jesus: A Devotional

Luke 24: 25-32 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

When Jesus encountered two of His followers on the road to Emmaus, he was amazed that they had not believed the women who informed them of the empty tomb. Then, in the three hours it possibly took to travel from Jerusalem to Emmaus, Jesus related all of the prophecies regarding the coming suffering of the Messiah that would result in His entering his glory. He taught them well. How much they knew and had forgotten, I am not certain. But, once Jesus broke bread and gave thanks, activities that He had done with them just before being arrested, their eyes were opened, and they knew who He was.

Today, we must walk the road to Emmaus with Jesus to fully know who He was and continues to be in our lives. By reading the words of Jesus, preferably in a red-letter Bible, we can learn the prophecies made regarding Him from the prophets, like Jeremiah. A good study Bible will reference where the scriptures recited by Jesus originated. We can then go to the Old Testament and read the stories so that we have context and understand the meaning of the scriptures.

When we link the Old Testament stories with the New Testament stories, our hearts should burn with an understanding of the profound love God and His Son, Jesus, have for us. We should be able to comprehend the Lord’s wonderful plan of salvation for us, to save us from our sins and bring us into a right relationship with Jesus, which allows us to recognize His presence and work in our lives.

To know Him is to love Him.

Amen.
