Keep Moving… For the Body’s Sake: Stream of Consciousness

Porto, Portugal, June 2023

I leave my portmanteau packed because I like to be on the move. I want to see everything the world offers before I cash in my winnings and call it a night. My body, mind, and soul are refreshed the moment I arrive at the airport, as the frenzied atmosphere engenders excitement and anticipation of traveling beyond my city and life. People speaking every language, luggage of every quality and color, babies in strollers, and older people in wheelchairs, all waiting in line to start their adventures.

An airport is like a small city, with the elites having their own lines and lounges and the rest of us standing in long lines because we can’t or won’t pay the higher prices to sit in the front of the plane. I don’t automatically think the people in Zone One are any better than those in Zones 6-8, where my husband and I usually are. We can afford the first-class seats, but why spend more if the plane arrives simultaneously? I use the savings to pay for housing in safe areas, tickets to museums and parks, and Uber to take us around when the train is inconvenient to we are too tired to walk one more step, which in our seventies happens a lot these days.

I believe that we have to keep our bodies moving, whether in our town or other places worldwide. I believe the body, mind, and soul need adventures and new experiences to stay rejuvenated and strong. Our main trip this year will not be until September, but I am already anticipating the ride to the airport, tagging bags, standing in line to check bags in, and finding our plane, which seems to always be at the end of the rows. I am joyful knowing that we have paid for the trips to sit back and imagine all the places we will go and, oh, the fun we will have.

Travel is one of the necessities of my life. To keep moving around the world is a form of therapy for my old soul, mind, and body. Come on, Septemeber! I am ready to go!
