For the Day When We Are All Free

I sat on the hillsides, looking at the cemetery below.

I wondered why I was alive, and others didn’t survive.

I knew I wasn’t special or any more highly favored or blessed.

I can’t explain why or why not, but I am thankful to be free.

I have tried to stuff the survivor’s guilt deep inside of me,

Because the decisions about life and death are not mine.

I’ve learned to mourn the others and then let them go,

Leaving them safe in the arms of the blessed Divine.

I hope the day will come when domestic violence is no more,

When all people are free from the need of others for control.

But, that day can only arrive by teaching kids the meaning of love,

And that ownership of others’ minds and bodies is not the goal.
