Every Child Should Play “Sorry!” It’s a Life Lesson!

Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite game (card, board, video, etc.)? Why?

I loved the game Sorry! I played in the park’s community center near where the last aunt who raised my sister and me lived. We did not have money for board games, so I went to the center every opportunity I could find. I tried to find other children or adults who worked there to play the game with me every time I visited the center. I loved the red, yellow, green, and red game pieces. I always chose the green, thinking they were infused with good luck.

The game is instructive in that you are trying to go around a board from Start to Home. You throw the dice and hope for a high number to get you around the board quickly. But even better is a card that allows you to move faster. The other fascinating card is the one that allows you to switch your opponents’ pieces, which can bring you closer to your goal. It teaches you how to strategize but also about being merciful and kind. You must decide if you are willing to place someone else in a difficult position just to win a game, particularly a best friend or sibling you adore.

I wanted people to like me, so I sometimes did not take advantage of the opportunities to change someone else’s course so I could win. I disliked people who seemed to love to hurt others because they had the power to do so. Yes, I know that it is only a game, but in every game we played as children, we learned something about life if we were attentive to the lessons.

I think every child would love the game, and playing it with adults would help them learn mercy, justice, unselfishness, and that winning isn’t always the goal. Learning empathy and having fun just for the sheer joy of the game is sometimes better than winning. I loved playing the game, and I bought the game for my grandchildren. Every child would benefit from playing the game with family and friends. Indeed, if you call me, I will come over and play it with you.
