Psalm 112:4-10 Light shines in the darkness for the godly. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. Good comes to those who lend money generously and conduct their business fairly. Such people will not be overcome by evil. Those who are righteous will be long remembered. They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them. They are confident and fearless and can face their foes triumphantly. They share freely and give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will be remembered forever. They will have influence and honor. The wicked will see this and be infuriated.
Righteous is one of the most misunderstood of words in the Christian’s vocabulary. Too many people believe they are righteous because they attend church, pay their tithes, and shout, “Amen.” They are self-righteous, because their lack of showing love to others, especially to the poor and the stranger among us, suggest they don’t understand the true meaning of the word.
The psalmist defines the righteous as those who share freely and give generously to those in need. Their good deeds are forever remembered by the people whom they help. I still remember the people who came to my rescue when I thought that I would never escape poverty’s grip.
The righteous display the character of God and a servant’s heart. Exodus 34:6-7 states, “And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.” Knowing the character of God is the first step toward living a righteous life, wherein light always shines and, even in difficult moments, the righteous needn’t fear bad news, for they trust in the Lord to care for them and be with them in all situations.
Let us strive to be righteous as the Lord wills. The Lord prefers living righteously over fulfilling traditions, obedience over sacrifices, and fairness over burnt offerings. He calls the righteous to live in the light of His love. His light never goes out.
Amen.
