I’d Love to Be Miss Marple: No Rocking Chair for Me!

Daily writing prompt
If you could be a character from a book or film, who would you be? Why?

If I could be any character, I would be Miss Marple. She is a feisty older citizen who isn’t sitting around knitting and waiting for her demise. I have always loved puzzles and murder mysteries, so to be able to solve murders would be the cat’s meow. Also, to live in a small English village like St. Mary Mead would be fantastic. Knowing and helping all of your neighbors and joining the Women’s Institute would keep an old lady busy. Going to the local pub for steak and kidney pie and a pint would be living the life. Helping the police to solve murders and putting bad gals and guys in jail would keep the “old gray cells” ( yes, I love Poirot, too) alert and make every day exciting and worth getting up.

The only thing I would change about Miss Marple is making her a Mrs. I love my husband, and I wouldn’t give him up to play detective. Of course, he would probably be appalled that a proper English lady wants to meddle in such things as gory crime scenes, autopsy reports, and trying to outsmart criminals. However, I could only love a man who would be supportive and who would do the cooking so that I could do my sleuthing without him constantly asking me to “act my age.” Now that I think about it, maybe this is why many of my favorite female detectives are single!

I adore several older murder-solving English ladies, such as Aunt Bessie on the Isle of Man, Vera in Northumberland, and Susan Ryeland of the Magpie Murders. What a great way to stay physically, socially, cognitively, and emotionally healthy in older age. Between murder investigations, I would take long rambles on the moors, learn to cook scones for great afternoon teas, and maybe birdwatch. No rocking chair for me! Give me a good old murder mystery to solve, and I would be happy ever after!

  1. Regina, we can definitely hang out together. I have love murder mysteries since the 8th grade. I, too, am a fan of Vera and Miss Marple and Angela Lansbury, also Poirot and so many others. However, I am unfamiliar with Aunt Bessie, Susan Ryeland but will search for them. Yes, I agree “I adore several older murder-solving English ladies.” Great blog as always. Have a great day.
