A Case of False Identity: Fandango Story Starter Challenge

The woman sitting next to me slipped a note into my hand that read, “He’s not who he says he is.” I had a momentary lapse in my thinking because I had bought everything the guy said as truth. He looked the part of a successful investment broker, with his $1000 gray pinstriped suit, $125 Florsheim loafers, and a Rolex that looked authentic. He was confident, and if he was lying, I hoped never to play poker with him, for I spotted no “tells.”

On second thought, maybe the vintage van he was driving should have been a dead giveaway. It was an old Morris Minor, but in excellent shape. So, I assumed he had spent a fortune having it restored to mint condition.

I was grateful to the woman for the warning, because I was about to give this man $50000 as an investment in new condos at Market and Vine Streets. I would have lost everything, and I didn’t have much to sacrifice in such a shady deal.

I politely declined the opportunity and excused myself from the table. I didn’t look at the woman because I knew that she might be in danger from him if he knew she had tipped me off. But I am glad she knew that we women have to stick together.
